(Montreal, May 2nd, 2018). The citizens group, Les Polluées de Montréal-Trudeau reacted to the new expansion project announced yesterday by Aéroports de Montréal (ADM). The airport announced the construction of a new 2.5 billion dollar terminal, in order to double its capacity. The repercussions would be:
– the creation of another passenger terminal on the land of the current airport, in the middle of Montreal, after having already integrated the passenger flights of Dorval and Mirabel from 1996 to 2004;
– an increase in the number of airplanes overhead, at low altitude;
– more noise and air pollution, as well as increased risk of accidents for surrounding communities.
Why were the Citizens of Montreal not Consulted?
The sudden announcement took place without the citizens of Montreal having been consulted. The airport is outside the jurisdiction of the Quebec government or the City of Montreal, since it is the property of the Crown.
On behalf of Les Polluées de Montréal-Trudeau, Pierre Lachapelle stated: “We strongly protest the objective of the project announced yesterday by Aéroports de Montréal. Why was the population of Montreal not consulted?”
The Announcement by Aéroports de Montréal is undemocratic
Pierre Lachapelle went on to add: “Aéroports de Montréal is a secretive corporation, that manages the airport as though is was an uninhabited desert. It needs to be scrutinized by the public, especially when it embarks on major projects. This is what happens in democratic countries. Canada should be a state of law. Can it still claim this?
Why a Sudden Announcement After the Authorization of a Class Action Suit?
Aéroports de Montréal is currently the object of a class action suit initiated by the citizens group, Les Pollués de Montréal-Trudeau, because of the noise levels due to overhead airplanes in several densely populated boroughs of Montreal. The noise and air pollution has been the subject of scientific and public health studies which warn of its impact on the population.
Although fully aware of these studies, Aéroports de Montréal went ahead and announced a project that will clearly lead to increased pollution.

  1. I am interested in your fund raising activity on May 24th but your page is not clear. I don’t see the details regarding this event. Where is it happening?

    1. Good day Ms. De Vincenzo,
      It was an event held in May 2017. We will surely have a new fund raising activity shortly. You will be informed in our next newsletter.

  2. This is getting ridiculous. When we moved to Saint-Laurent, we moved to this northern area specifically because noise was insignificant. After the change in the summer of 2016 it is almost impossible to stay outside. Every 2 minutes there’s a plane taking off with deafening noise…
