Montreal, May 29th, 2018. Les pollués de Montréal-Trudeau (LPDMT) wrote to the Honourable Catherine McKenna, federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and asked that her officials carry out a public consultation of the terminal enlargement project announced last April 30th by the Montreal-Trudeau Airport (Aéroports de Montréal, ADM).
Pierre Lachapelle, president of LPDMT, announced : “A project of this size must pass the test of social acceptability and meet requirements in terms of economic, social, environmental, and public health impacts.”
The current airport is the result of the fusion, between 1996 and 2004, of Dorval and Mirabel airports, and centralized at Dorval all international and passenger charter flights.
Pierre Lachapelle declared: “The current noise and air pollution generated by airplanes over Montreal, day and night, have lead to numerous complaints by citizens, who cannot take it any longer. Any thoughtful citizen can understand this.”
The federal government loudly proclaims that it acts to promote sustainable development and environmental protection, and that it listens to citizens impacted by large projects.
Les pollués de Montréal-Trudeau and hundreds of citizens believe that it is time for the federal government to shift from saying the right things to doing the right thing.
The World Health Organization has already warned of the health impacts of noise and air pollution. In particular, the new project must be examined from the point of view of its additional impact on public health. Pierre Lachapelle added: “This 2.5 billion dollar project must be submitted to a complete environmental assessment by competent and independent experts.”
The citizens group Les Pollués de Montréal-Trudeau was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 2013. Les Pollués de Montréal-Trudeau is pressing for modern management of the environmental impacts of the airport, accountability and transparency on the part of Aéroports de Montréal, and an enforced ban on flights 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

  1. I live in Pointe Claire. Many nights plains fly over my house 2 – 5 minutes apart making sleep impossible! It doesn’t end at 11PM but continues to all hours.( I have to get up at 5AM to get to work on time) It seems dependant on wind direction, but spending nights, sometimes for a week with little to no sleep is unhealthy and dangerous. We have to drive into Montreal for work and falling asleep at the wheel is now a present danger. Doing my job has also become difficult due to lack of sleep. It has impacted my health and studies show you get sick more often when you suffer from insufficient sleep. I have never had so many colds and flues!
I think the citizens of Pointe Claire affected by this should be included in this class action suit.
